In my Critical Thinking and Communication in Environmental Studies class, we spent the semester developing a policy analysis paper. This involved researching past policies, looking at the science of the problem, evaluating different stakeholders’ perspectives, and creating a policy recommendation based on the evidence that we found. I chose the focus of my paper to be on the issue of electronic waste because it is a problem that I feel isn’t being properly addressed. Due to consumer culture and planned obsolescence, this problem is only getting worse. I was interested in learning about the different policies that are currently in place, and how effective they are at trying to combat this problem. Something that was new to me in developing this paper was creating stakeholder tables. It was very helpful for assessing a variety of stakeholders’ contributions, values, and concerns. I also learned how to evaluate different policy options in order to synthesize a recommendation that will be the most helpful in addressing the issue of e-waste, while taking different areas of criteria into consideration. I feel successful in completing this paper because I gained knowledge on how to organize long papers with many different sections, and how to communicate problems with their solutions clearly and with evidence.
