Professional Mission Statement

How I got interested in Environmental Studies:

Going to community college in San Jose, I was very stressed since I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do career-wise. There were many majors that I was interested in but didn’t necessarily provoke the enthusiasm needed to pursue all the way. When I took my first environmental science class, it felt like everything fell into place. Switching my major to environmental studies seemed so obvious. It was already something that I was passionate about, so I wanted to learn how to make a career out of it. Growing up, I had a deep connection and respect for nature and tried to live as sustainably as I could. I was captivated by learning about all the different connections in the environment, from a biological standpoint to sociological, cultural,  business, and law. I wanted to continue learning, and more importantly, learn how to improve our world.

Course that helped me Develop Skills at CSUMB:

In my critical thinking and communications class at CSUMB, our final paper consisted of examining an environmental problem and coming up with the best solution for it. I chose to write about electronic waste since it is a growing problem in this technological age. I had improved my research skills immensely in order to look for background, scientific information, and current policies on my topic. I also learned the importance of looking at different perspectives of stakeholders when analyzing a policy. This class helped me learn necessary skills that I will continue to develop as I move towards my career.

What I've Learned from Novasutras

Currently, I am interning at a developing non-profit organization in Santa Cruz, called Novasutras. I help to organize and set up meetings in person, as well as over Zoom. I also create posts for their social media accounts and help to raise awareness on certain issues and events through outreach and advocacy. I value the opportunity of working with experienced activists because I have learned new skills regarding website design, outreach, and email listings. Here, my skills of organization and creativity have also improved by practicing multitasking and coming up with solutions.

Career Goals:

After graduating, I plan on moving back to the Bay Area. In terms of my professional goals, my ideal career would be doing environmental policy analysis. More specifically, in the environmental health field. I would love to be involved in improving my community, by pushing for solutions that will benefit the earth as a whole.
